Bico do tucano e as histórias das margens: o entendimento do impacto das mudanças do Rio Tocantins por meio de narrativas ribeirinhas

Os valores partilhados e consolidados pelos ribeirinhos foram se transformando ao longo do tempo, moldados pelas situações impostas pelas modificações ocorridas no Rio Tocantins. A vivência nas margens foi se fragmentando e se reconstruindo diante das mudanças naturais e antrópicas do rio. Este trabalho apresenta uma pesquisa sobre memórias e identidades do Rio Tocantins, construída a partir da perspectiva da população que vive em suas margens, na cidade de Imperatriz/MA. O principal objetivo é compreender como as transformações do rio desestruturam, influenciam e reconstroem o cotidiano de pescadores, barqueiros e demais pessoas que moram e trabalham em seus arredores. Para fundamentar a escrita, foram trabalhados os conceitos de patrimônio (Bortolotto, 2011), memória (Halbwachs, 1990; Pollak, 1992), identidade (Goulart; Perazzo; Lemos, 2005; Silva, 2017) e oralidade (Portelli, 1996; Fraser, 1993; Souza, 2002). A metodologia utilizada aliou-se à História Oral, com entrevistas realizadas entre 2023 e 2024, envolvendo pescadores, barqueiros, comerciantes e moradores das margens do Rio Tocantins. Essas entrevistas contribuíram para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, que busca compreender o significado do rio e seus sentidos simbólicos, a partir da visão compartilhada pelos indivíduos que vivem à sua beira. O estudo, de cunho antropológico, ambiental, cultural e histórico, visa compreender a realidade contemporânea frente ao passado do Rio Tocantins, observando as modificações na vegetação, o impacto da extração de areia e a construção de barragens. Tais atividades têm provocado significativas mudanças ambientais, no cotidiano e na economia das populações ribeirinhas. A desestruturação de costumes e a quebra da identidade local são consequências dessas ações, evidenciadas nas narrativas coletadas, que mostram também processos de resistência e reorganização das vivências. A nova realidade do rio reflete diretamente na identidade desse povo. A História Oral possibilitou a coleta de relatos e experiências que confirmam a importância do patrimônio imaterial na construção da história material e simbólica do Rio Tocantins. ABSTRACT

The values shared and consolidated by the riverside dwellers have been transformed over time, shaped by the situations imposed by the changes that have occurred in the Tocantins River. Life along its banks has been fragmented and reconstructed in the face of the river’s natural and anthropogenic transformations. This study presents research on the memories and identities associated with the Tocantins River, built from the perspective of the population living on its banks, in the city of Imperatriz, Maranhão. The main objective is to understand how the transformations of the river disrupt, influence, and reconstruct the daily lives of fishermen, boatmen, and other people who live and work in its surroundings. The study is grounded in the concepts of heritage (Bortolotto, 2011), memory (Halbwachs, 1990; Pollak, 1992), identity (Goulart; Perazzo; Lemos, 2005; Silva, 2017), and orality (Portelli, 1996; Fraser, 1993; Souza, 2002). The methodology used was ethnographic, combined with Oral History, through interviews conducted between 2023 and 2024 with fishermen, boatmen, merchants, and residents living along the Tocantins River. These interviews contributed to the development of the research, which seeks to understand the meaning and symbolic value of the river, from the shared perspective of those who inhabit its margins. The study, of anthropological, environmental, cultural, and historical nature, aims to understand the contemporary reality in relation to the past of the Tocantins River, observing changes in vegetation, the impact of sand extraction, and dam construction. Such activities have caused significant environmental changes, as well as transformations in the daily lives and economy of riverside populations. The disruption of customs and the erosion of local identity are consequences of these actions, as evidenced in the collected narratives, which also reveal processes of resistance and reorganization of ways of living. The new reality of the river directly reflects on the identity of its people. Oral History enabled the collection of stories and experiences that confirm the importance of intangible heritage in constructing the material and symbolic history of the Tocantins River.
