Festa do negro: histórias e vivências do 13 de maio em Codó/MA

Abstract

RESUMO: Este estudo analisou a Festa do Negro, festa popular realizada no dia 13 de maio, criada pelo Centro Operário Codoense, realizada há mais de 70 anos no município de Codó/MA. Embora sua origem remonte às comemorações da abolição, a festa foi ressignificada ao longo do tempo e hoje carrega novos significados, voltados principalmente para a valorização e preservação da cultura negra do município. A pesquisa de viés qualitativa, baseou-se na revisão bibliográfica, na análise documental e nas abordagens metodológicas da História Oral. A coleta de dados se deu através de entrevistas semiestruturadas com participantes da festa e antigos sócios do Centro Operário Codoense, além dos diálogos estabelecidos com a secretaria municipal responsável pelos eventos culturais da cidade. Os resultados obtidos apontam que a festa se configura como um importante espaço de sociabilidade, identidade e memória, constituindo-se como um dos únicos eventos voltado para o público negro no município. A pesquisa revelou também os desafios para a realização da festa, após sua incorporação ao calendário de eventos da cidade. Ademais, a análise do impacto da Festa do Negro no cenário cultural codoense, evidenciou o descaso na promoção dos eventos culturais de Codó, a escassez de ações e políticas públicas de valorização e preservação das manifestações culturais e tradicionais do município, e de enfrentamento do preconceito religioso. Desse modo, a Festa do Negro tem impacto significativo no cenário cultural codoense, como local de resistência cultural, de preservação e resgate das manifestações culturais e dos saberes tradicionais do município. ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the Festa do Negro, a popular festival held on May 13, created by the Centro Operário Codoense and celebrated for over 70 years in the municipality of Codó, Maranhão, Brazil. Although its origins date back to the celebrations of abolition, the festival has been re-signified over time and currently carries new meanings, primarily focused on the appreciation and preservation of Black culture in the municipality. This qualitative research was based on bibliographic review, document analysis, and methodological approaches of Oral History. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with festival participants and former members of the Centro Operário Codoense, as well as through dialogues with the municipal department responsible for cultural events in the city. The results indicate that the festival constitutes an important space for sociability, identity, and memory, and is one of the few events specifically aimed at the Black population in the municipality. The research also revealed challenges to the organization of the festival following its incorporation into the city’s official events calendar. Furthermore, the analysis of the impact of the Festa do Negro on Codó’s cultural landscape highlighted the neglect in promoting cultural events, the scarcity of public actions and policies for the appreciation and preservation of the municipality’s cultural and traditional manifestations, and the lack of initiatives to combat religious prejudice. Thus, the Festa do Negro has a significant impact on Codó’s cultural scene as a space of cultural resistance and as a means of preserving and revitalizing the municipality’s cultural expressions and traditional knowledge.
