Entre o silêncio e a resistência: uma análise da invisibilização das religiões de matriz africana em Grajaú-MA

Abstract

O presente trabalho analisa a sub-representação das religiões de matriz africana no município de Grajaú Maranhão investigando como processos históricos, institucionais e simbólicos contribuíram para sua invisibilidade nas narrativas oficiais e no imaginário social local. A pesquisa articula revisão bibliográfica e trabalho de campo, por meio de entrevistas e observação etnográfica em terreiros do município, buscando compreender os impactos dessa invisibilidade na vida dos praticantes. Os resultados evidenciam que, embora juridicamente assegurada, a liberdade religiosa enfrenta limites no reconhecimento social, produzindo silenciamentos, estigmatizações e estratégias de ocultamento da fé. Conclui-se que a ausência de registro e valorização dessas tradições não corresponde à sua inexistência, mas a um processo seletivo de legitimação simbólica que hierarquiza expressões religiosas. O estudo contribui para ampliar o debate sobre diversidade religiosa e justiça simbólica no contexto local. ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the underrepresentation of Afro-Brazilian religions in the municipality of Grajaú Maranhão investigating how historical, institutional, and symbolic processes have contributed to their invisibility in official narratives and the local social imaginary. The research combines a literature review and fieldwork, through interviews and ethnographic observation in religious centers in the municipality, seeking to understand the impacts of this invisibility on the lives of practitioners. The results show that, although legally guaranteed, religious freedom faces limits in social recognition, producing silences, stigmatizations, and strategies for concealing faith. It concludes that the absence of registration and valorization of these traditions does not correspond to their non-existence, but to a selective process of symbolic legitimation that hierarchizes religious expressions. The study contributes to broadening the debate on religious diversity and symbolic justice in the local context.
