Abstract Cancer is one of the main challenges in global public health and is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of cells that can invade tissues and organs, compromising the body’s functioning. In this context, mathematical modeling has emerged as an important tool for understanding the dynamics of tumor growth, allowing us to quantitatively describe the progression of the disease and provide support for studies related to the development of therapeutic strategies. This work aimed to analyze the growth of solid tumors in the avascular phase using the Logistic and Gompertz mathematical models, comparing their characteristics and their ability to represent the biological behavior of cell proliferation. Ini- tially, historical aspects of the development of ordinary differential equations and classical population growth models were presented, highlighting their applications in mathematical oncology. Next, an analytical deduction of the solutions of the models studied was carried out, and computer simulations were built using Matlab software for the graphical compari- son of the growth curves. Additionally, three-dimensional simulations were developed in PhysiCell software, allowing the visualization of the spatial evolution of avascular tumors at different time intervals, as well as the identification of viable and necrotic cells. The results obtained showed that both models satisfactorily describe tumor growth in its initial phase; however, the Gompertz model showed behavior more consistent with the dynamics observed in solid tumors, as it represents the progressive reduction in the growth rate as the tumor approaches the medium’s carrying capacity. In this way, it is concluded that the integration of mathematical modeling and computer simulation is an effective approach for studying tumor growth, contributing to a better understanding of the biological pro- cesses involved and showing the potential of Mathematics as a support tool for research in oncology.pt_BR
