Conhecimento sobre automedicação e uso racional de medicamentos entre adolescentes do ensino médio: desafios para a educação em saúde no ambiente escolar

A automedicação entre adolescentes constitui um relevante problema de saúde pública, especialmente pelos riscos associados ao uso inadequado de medicamentos e à influência de fontes de informação não confiáveis. Este estudo objetivou avaliar o nível de conhecimento, percepções e fontes de informação sobre o uso racional de medicamentos entre estudantes do ensino médio de duas escolas públicas de São Luís-MA, com o intuito de identificar lacunas e subsidiar estratégias de educação em saúde. Trata-se de uma pesquisa quantitativa, descritiva e transversal. Os dados foram coletados por meio de questionário estruturado aplicado aos estudantes, abordando características sociodemográficas, conhecimento sobre medicamentos, uso racional, fontes de informação e percepção de riscos. A análise foi realizada por meio de estatística descritiva e de matrizes de correlação de Pearson e Spearman. Os resultados revelaram que os estudantes possuem conhecimentos satisfatórios sobre aspectos como a importância da leitura da bula, a necessidade de completar o tratamento com antibióticos e os riscos da automedicação. No entanto, foram identificadas lacunas significativas quanto às interações medicamentosas, descarte correto de medicamentos vencidos e influência da propaganda. As principais fontes de informação citadas foram familiares, profissionais de saúde e internet. Conclui-se que, apesar dos conhecimentos parciais demonstrados, persistem fragilidades que reforçam a necessidade de ações contínuas de educação em saúde no ambiente escolar para promover o uso racional de medicamentos e reduzir a automedicação inadequada. Self-medication among adolescents constitutes a significant public health concern, particularly due to the risks associated with the inappropriate use of medicines and the influence of unreliable sources of information. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge, perceptions, and sources of information regarding the rational use of medicines among high school students from two public schools in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, in order to identify knowledge gaps and support the development of health education strategies. This was a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to students, addressing sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge about medicines, rational medicine use, sources of information, and risk perception. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's and Spearman's correlation matrices. The results showed that the students demonstrated satisfactory knowledge regarding the importance of reading package inserts, completing antibiotic treatment, and the risks associated with self-medication. However, significant knowledge gaps were identified concerning drug interactions, the proper disposal of expired medicines, and the influence of pharmaceutical advertising. The main sources of information reported were family members, healthcare professionals, and the Internet. It is concluded that, despite the partial knowledge demonstrated by the students, important weaknesses remain, highlighting the need for continuous health education initiatives in the school environment to promote the rational use of medicines and reduce inappropriate self-medication.
