Entre tradições e contradições: uma análise em torno das formações do partidarismo político maranhense no século XIX

Abstract

RESUMO: Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar as transformações políticas e sociais da sociedade maranhense entre o final do século XVIII e a primeira metade do século XIX, expondo sobre as influências europeias que ficaram enraizadas na sociedade Imperial e as reformas pombalinas que ajudaram para formação de um Estado moderno brasileiro. Apresentaremos que a modernização econômica proporcionada pelas reformas atraiu diversos “estrangeiros” para Colônia, em especial, para o território do Maranhão, onde estabeleceram seus poderios econômicos sustentados na agroexportação. Como meio para aumentar e reter vantagens, sejam elas econômicas ou sociais, os ditos “desbravadores” estrangeiros buscavam se relacionar com funcionários, ex-funcionários da Coroa ou outras famílias – relações capazes de proporcionarem algum tipo de vantagem que sanassem seus interesses particulares, dando início a formação de diversos grupos de elite e longas redes de entroncamentos familiares. Esses indivíduos também adentraram na política local, utilizando da esfera “pública” para aumentar seu poder e riquezas. No entanto, a presença dos mesmos, junto aos seus grupos, deu início a várias disputas políticas, processos de conturbações e contradições no setor político durante a primeira metade do século XIX. As disputas entre essas elites marcaram a primeira metade do século XIX, com a dificuldade de consolidar um Estado-Nação, mas também ajudou a construir uma identidade social e cultural política, transformado o sistema político, possibilitando a entrada de indivíduos de diversas origens sociais no espaço político e institucionalizar os partidos políticos.__ABSTRACT: The objective of this paper is to examine the political and social transformations that occurred in Maranhão society between the late 18th century and the early 19th century. In particular, it seeks to elucidate the manner in which European influences became embedded in the fabric of Imperial society and the role that the Pombaline reforms played in the formation of a modern Brazilian state. We will demonstrate that the economic modernization initiated by the reforms prompted the arrival of numerous "foreigners" to the Colony, particularly to the region of Maranhão. These individuals established their economic authority on the basis of agro-exports. In order to gain and retain advantages, whether economic or social, the so-called foreign "explorers" sought relationships with officials, former officials of the Crown, or other families. These relationships were sought because they could provide some kind of advantage that would solve their particular interests. This resulted in the formation of various elite groups and long networks of family entanglements. These individuals also engaged in local politics, utilizing the "public" sphere to enhance their influence and accumulate wealth. However, their presence, along with that of their groups, gave rise to a number of political disputes, processes of turmoil, and contradictions within the political sector during the first half of the nineteenth century. The disputes between these elites marked the first half of the 19th century, with the difficulty of consolidating a nation-state. However, they also had the effect of building a political, social, and cultural identity, transforming the political system, enabling individuals from disparate social backgrounds to enter the political arena, and institutionalizing political parties.
